AI, fresh, cooled and frozen Semen, and Embryo transplant:

These procedures should be fully documented and performed by either a veterinarian, or a facility that specialises in equine reproduction. For registration purposes, for a foal conceived in such a manner, all documentation relating to the insemination/embrio transplant must be signed and witnessed by a veterinarian, or equine fertility specialist.

Please contact the registrar prior to the event.

DNA parentage testing:

In the case of any doubt as to paternal identity of a foal, the Society reserves the right to request the breeder to supply DNA evidence to satisfy the Breed Society.

Importing of Spanish Mustangs from the USA

All imported Spanish Mustangs should hold a registration certificate with either the SMR or SSMA, or certificates should be pending. It is advisable to purchase animals only from reputable breeders, who themselves are either members of the SMR or SSMA.

In the rare case of a dispute with the animal’s breeder, the Society will decide on a case by case basis whether to accept the animal into the Main Stud book by inspection and the evidence supplied. It is advisable to contact us in this instance prior to exporting the animal from the USA.

Breeding for temperament, quality and preservation

All breeders should be familiar with the breed standard for the Spanish Mustang and aim to breed only stock that reproduces the desired traits and is conformationally sound. The Society reserves the right to refuse entry into the Main Studbook to any horse they deem below standard or with gross conformational faults. In order for the breed to be taken seriously and recognised in the EU, as well as adhering to the breed standard, breeders should also endeavor to breed for performance in any of the numerous disciplines where feasible.
